Earth Day

“Our goal is not just an environment of clean air and water and scenic beauty. The objective is an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all other human beings and all other living creatures.” – Gaylord Nelson

History of Earth Day

After witnessing a massive oil spill in 1969, Gaylord Nelson (then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin), was inspired to create Earth Day. He announced his idea, and as a result, on the 22nd of April in 1970, “20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.” The first Earth Day was pretty successful and led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. Gaylord Nelson said that “It was a gamble, but it worked.” Earth Day is now celebrating its 43rd anniversary and over one billion people in almost 200 countries are participating!
