Chicago Style Pizza

Forgiveness is divine, but never pay full price for late pizza.” – Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Pizza can be made so many different ways! You can put a variety of toppings on a pizza and even choose what kind of crust you would like, whether it’s thin crust, hand tossed, stuffed with cheese, and etc. With all of the ways that you can make a pizza, one style stands out to a lot of people, and that’s Chicago-style pizza!

Chicago-style pizza includes a number of different pizza styles that were created in Chicago. One of the most famous styles, is deep-dish pizza! Basically, deep-dish pizza has a crust of up to three inches tall, which makes the pizza thicker in order to resemble more of a pie instead of a flatbread. This style of pizza is normally higher in ingredients such as cheese and tomato sauce.

While Chicago pizzerias are more commonly known for their deep-dish style pizza, they do also serve stuffed pizza and thin crust pizza. Check out some of the popular Chicago pizzerias to see what you would prefer!

Uno Chicago Grill

Uno Chicago Grill was opened by Ike Sewell, a former University of Texas football star, in 1943 under the name Pizzeria Uno. According to an article from Chicago Daily News in 1965, the deep-dish recipe was created by chef Rudy Malnati Sr. However, regardless of who came up with it, Pizzeria Uno claims to have originated this style of pizza! The recipe combined “authentic Italian spices and quality tomatoes with more cheese than people could believe” and then it baked in a round pan for nearly an hour. Now, there are over 140 Uno Chicago Grill restaurants, which can be found in:

  • 24 states
  • the District of Columbia
  • Puerto Rico
  • South Korea
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Honduras
  • Kuwait
  • Saudi Arabia

Giordano’s opened in 1974 on Chicago’s historic south side and is famous for their “double-crusted, ricotta cheese stuffed masterpiece.” This recipe was originated by Mama Giordano in a small northern Italian town near Torino. Brothers Efren and Joseph Boglio were “discouraged by the lack of authentic pizza available in the city” when they moved to Chicago and wanted to start their own pizza business. So, they decided to introduce their Mama’s recipe and have since been acclaimed “Chicago’s Best Pizza” by NBC, CBS Chicago, New York Times, Chicago Magazine, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Eater, Home & Garden Magazine, Concierge Preferred and more. You can also find starters, salads, pastas, and sandwiches at this restaurant!

Lou Malnati’s

Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria was first opened by Lou and his wife Jean, on March 17, 1971. Lou already had experience working in a pizzeria (Pizzeria Uno to be exact) and knew that commitment to quality would be important. “Every Lou Malnati’s pizza is handmade from scratch using the finest and freshest ingredients. Every year the Malnati team hand selects California vine-ripened tomatoes for the perfect sweet and tangy taste. The exclusive sausage blend is seasoned to their exact specifications. The fresh mozzarella cheese comes from the same small dairy that has supplied Lou Malnati’s for over 40 years. And the family’s secret recipe for flaky, buttery crust has been passed down from generation to generation.”

When Lou began opening pizzerias in other locations, he came across some tough times. However, his perseverance allowed for a family owned and operated company to extend to 36 locations. “About 25 percent of Lou Malnati’s full-time staff have given 10 or more years of service” and their customers have been pretty loyal too!
