Scary Salem Sights

When witches go riding,
and black cats are seen,
the moon laughs and whispers,
‘tis near Halloween.

In the Seventeenth Century, a fishing settlement was established on Cape Ann by England’s Dorchester Company. After struggling for a few years, a group of settlers relocated on fertile land by the Naumkeag River. This “Fishing Place” was renamed Salem in 1629 and was able to thrive on farming and fishing.

The Massachusetts Bay Colony went through a time where there were “ordinary stresses of 17th-century life,” people had a “strong belief in the devil,” and “accusations of witchcraft” occurred. This, combined with a rivalry between nearby towns and a smallpox epidemic, caused for a great deal of fear and suspicion. This era is often referred to as The Salem Witch Trials of 1692.

The eighteenth century consisted of Salem becoming a “major fishing, shipbuilding and maritime trade center” and after that it developed into an “important manufacturing and retail center.”

Now, Salem prides itself on the fact that it is “Still Making History.” Watch this video to see how Salem has reflected upon its history to pique interest in people:
