Basketball Buzz

“When you’re a basketball fan, March Madness is like a dream come true because it lasts for a whole month.” – BuzzFeed (#1 Reason from the 23 Reasons March Madness Is The Most Wonderful Time of the Year)

The first full day of March Madness tips off this afternoon, with 64 teams playing 63 edge-of-your-seat, single-elimination games, according to USA Today. The article, March Madness: Frenzy reaches new heights, states that “People love to talk about and argue about sports.” Because of this, the social media trends that revolve around March Madness have significantly grown, even since last year! Check out some of the conversations, predictions, and expectations that people have been making about the NCAA basketball tournament.

Wichita State

Last year, the Wichita State Shockers were the No. 9 seed that reached the Final Four. “Wichita State now wears the target with a 34-0 record, No. 2 national ranking and as the No. 1-seeded team in the Midwest Regional.” Coach Gregg Marshall says that while last year, they were a “fuzzy, warm story,” this year people just keep asking “When are you going to lose?” According to Marshall, the bottom line is that they have to play. With that said, Wichita State is the first team to enter the NCAA tournament undefeated since Nevada Las Vegas in 1991. I wonder how they will do! To learn more about their journey, read the article “This time, Wichita State has the major target on its back.”

University of Virginia

Although Virginia secured the final No. 1 seed after they won the ACC tournament, some people are questionable of how the Cavaliers will perform. According to International Business Times – Sports, the University of Virginia is the “least decorated in the top four”, does not have any NCAA titles in their resume, and have the worst record among the four squads. Stephen F. Austin

Everyone loves a good underdog story and the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks just might be the upset to look out for during March Madness. The SFA Men’s Basketball team is the No. 12 seed and there are some people out there who are expecting them to beat the No. 5 seed, which is the VCU Rams. As one of three teams in the country to finish conference play undefeated, there are multiple reasons why the Lumberjacks are a popular pick for an upset on Friday. Find out why by reading  the SB Nation article, “NCAA Tournament 2014: The many reasons to love Stephen F. Austin.”
